The Department of Ecology and Geography was established in 2020 with the merger, by the decision of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, of the Department of Ecology of the Kostanay State University named after A. Baitursynov and the Department of Natural Sciences (geographical direction) of the Kostanay Pedagogical University named after U.Sultangazin. Interdisciplinary educational programs for bachelor's and master's degrees in the field of ecology and environmental protection offer opportunities for the development of competencies in the following areas: environmental assessment of the activities of industrial enterprises and agricultural systems, the quality of water systems, soils, landscapes, atmospheric air and their restoration; environmental activities of enterprises, waste management, environmental management, environmental monitoring, environmental values, politics and law; urban environmental problems; climate change, renewable energy sources, sustainable development of regions and ecosystems.
Training of bachelors in the specialty / educational program "Ecology" has been conducted since 2006. Since 2012, training has been conducted in the scientific-pedagogical and specialized magistracy in the specialty / educational program "Geoecology and environmental management". The peculiarities of educational programs in ecology and environmental protection are that they are developed and improved within the framework of international educational projects Tempus / Erasmus +, which ensures the competitiveness of graduates in the labor market.
To train pedagogical personnel, since 2004, an educational bachelor's program "Geography" has been opened. In 2019, an innovative educational bachelor's program for teacher training “Geography-Biology” was opened. In 2019, a license was obtained to open a master's program in the pedagogical direction "Geography".
Multilingual education has been conducted on the educational programs "Ecology" since 2013, "Geography" - since 2014, "Geoecology and environmental management" - since 2015.
All educational programs of the Department of Ecology and Geography are developed in accordance with the National Qualifications Framework, coordinated with the Dublin descriptors and the European Qualifications Framework. The modular curricula of the department's educational programs include disciplines that form both professional competencies and general cultural competencies of the 21st century. Undergraduate and graduate students acquire relevant knowledge in the subject area, analytical, research and language skills, develop leadership skills, cooperation and communication skills, innovative thinking, the ability to further continuous self-education and improve professional knowledge, skills and abilities. From 2011 to the present, educational programs of the specialties "Geography", "Ecology" occupy leading places in the national ratings of specialties of pedagogical universities and specialties of multidisciplinary universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The department actively cooperates with universities of far and near abroad, with state and private structures in the field of geography, ecology and environmental protection. On the basis of interaction under cooperation agreements, contractual scientific research is carried out, regular meetings and round tables are held with leading specialists of the region, scientific seminars, lectures by foreign teachers and leading practitioners are organized for students of both the sending university and the receiving university.
The teachers of the department are involved in the implementation of international educational projects Erasmus + in the field of reforming higher education. The results of the projects CIBELES, ECAP, SARUD, SUSDEV, SAGRIS are new and updated taught undergraduate and graduate courses in the field of the environment, inclusion in the educational process of global educational trends: distance learning, new methods of teaching and learning, the spread of green skills, strengthening communication with employers, lifelong learning, interdisciplinary research, multi- and transdisciplinary educational approaches.
The department has a program of academic mobility of students and teachers. International academic mobility is implemented according to the educational programs of Erasmus Mundus, bilateral agreements with foreign universities. Undergraduate and graduate students of the Department of Ecology and Geography studied at the universities of Ostrava (Czech Republic), Warsaw, Lodz (Poland), Perpignan (France), underwent internships in universities in Russia, Latvia, Poland, Kyrgyzstan, educational and professional practice in Belarus, Russia. In terms of internal mobility, students studied in Astana (Gumilyov ENU), Kokshetau, Arkalyk, Taraz.
Teachers also undergo advanced training under the new innovative programs of JSC Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools - Center for Pedagogical Excellence, FAO NTSPK "ОRLEU" - RIPKSO, language courses, KazNU named after al-Farabi, KarSU, the Institute of Geography, within the framework of the Erasmus + projects. Teachers passed internships at universities in Belarus (Grodno), Latvia (Riga), Bulgaria (Sofia), Russia (Ufa, Yekaterinburg, Moscow, Tomsk, St. Petersburg, Ulan-Ude), advanced training at universities in Poland (Krakow, Warsaw), Slovakia (Nitra), Austria (Vienna), Portugal (Coimbra), Great Britain (Newcastle).
An international scientific and pedagogical agreement was concluded with the Steppe Institute of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Orenburg).
Traditionally, meetings with employers are held, where issues related to educational programs are actively discussed. Forms of cooperation - round tables, methodological seminars, training courses, joint publications.
Graduates of the department work in general education and innovation schools in Kostanay, Kostanay and other regions of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management of the Akimat of Kostanay Region, in the Department of Ecology in Kostanay Region, in the Tobol-Torgay Basin Inspection for the regulation of the use and protection of water resources, in the branch of Kazhydromet in the Kostanay region, in the environmental services of enterprises of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in environmental private organizations, in the department of land relations of the akimat of Kostanay and other organizations.
