The Department of Zoohygiene and Microbiology was established in 1994 and renamed the Department of Veterinary Sanitation in 2009.

Since 1994, the head of the department was Professor Gershun V.I.; from 2006, the head of the department was Associate Professor Tuyakova R.K.; in 2013, Candidate of Veterinary Sciences Batyrbekov A.N. was appointed as the head of the department; in 2015, Candidate of Veterinary Sciences, Associate Professor Isabaev A.Zh. was appointed to this position. Since 2016, the head of the department has been Candidate of Veterinary Sciences Kaumenov N.S.

In 2009, a master's program (6M120200) was launched, and in 2010, a doctoral program (6D120200). Currently, master's and doctoral training is conducted under programs 7M09102 and 8D09102 in Veterinary Sanitation.

The main goal of the Department of Veterinary Sanitation is to provide the country with highly qualified specialists capable of ensuring national food safety and protecting public health.

The department staff are the authors of textbooks in the state and Russian languages ("Veterinary and Sanitary Examination of Livestock Products," "Industrial Veterinary and Sanitary Control of Livestock Products," "Veterinary Microbiology and Virology," "Private Bacteriology," "Sanitary Microbiology," "Veterinary Hygiene and Sanitation," "Intermediary Metabolism," etc.), monographs ("Food Safety"; "The Spread of L. monocytogenes in Fish Products and Sanitary Processing in Fish Processing Enterprises"; "Viability of L. monocytogenes in Concentrated Feed and Tuber Root Crops," "Rapid Diagnosis of Animal Clostridial Diseases").

Over the entire period of the department's existence, its teaching and research staff have published more than 60 textbooks and monographs, over 50 scientific research and methodological works, and have received more than 30 certificates of authorship and patents.

The department provides teaching for many core and specialized disciplines of various educational programs of the faculty.Specialist training is conducted in the state and Russian languages.
